Second Heathrow Airport strike could upend May Day holiday travel

A second Heathrow Airport is looming which could impact May Bank Holiday travel plans.

Nearly 800 workers plan strike action beginning on Tuesday 7 May until Monday 13 May.

It involves passenger services teams who assist travellers for connecting flights, trolley operations, and security.

Airport management is planning to outsource these positions by 1 June, Unite the union says.

It says Heathrow Airport Ltd (HAL) has ignored existing consultation procedures

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: “Heathrow Airport’s actions are deplorable. It is raking in massive profits for the bosses while trying to squeeze every last penny out of its workforce.”

“Unite is fully focused on defending its members jobs, pay and conditions.”

This adds to a prior announced airport strike by workers at a refuelling contractor at Heathrow.

Workers at AFS Ltd will strike on 4 to 6 May.

“Strike action will inevitably cause widespread disruption across the airport, leading to delays and disruption,” said Unite regional co-ordinating officer Wayne King said.
