Why Gatwick Airport Has Hiked Its Passenger Drop-Off Charge

London Gatwick Airport (LGW) has increased its passenger drop-off charges at its terminal forecourt from £5 to £6, the airport announced on its official social media account X, formerly known as Twitter.

Reducing congestion at LGW

The announcement on X prompted a wave of displeasure, with many expressing frustration in the comments section. In response to passenger concerns and to clarify the rationale behind the fee increase, LGW said that the decision was taken to reduce congestion at the airport.

According to the airport, the increased fee would allow it to “reinvest in sustainable transport and encourage more passengers and staff to use public transport to reach the airport.”

Different drop-off charges at London airports

London Gatwick is one of many city airports with a drop-off fee. Other airports, such as London Stansted (STN), London Heathrow (LHR), and London Luton (LTN), also have the fee.

  • London Heathrow has a £5 fee that applies to all vehicles dropping off passengers at the airport’s terminal forecourts.
  • The drop-off charge at Luton’s terminal is £5 for a 10-minute period, applicable to all vehicles dropping off passengers at the designated Priority Drop-Off Zone nearest to the terminal building.
  • London Stansted has the highest drop-off fee, imposing a £7 charge for a 15-minute period. This fee applies to all vehicles dropping off passengers at the terminal’s Express Set Down zone.

Notably, London City Airport (LCY) does not impose a drop-off fee. Although you can drop off passengers on the terminal forecourt next to the terminal building, waiting is not permitted in this area.
