Virgin Australia Launches Pets in Cabin Bookings

Virgin Australia Launches Pets in Cabin Bookings Using Velocity Points

Virgin Australia now allows Velocity members to book its Pets in Cabin service using Velocity Points for the first time.

Members can redeem 18,600 Velocity Points per flight to bring a small dog or cat onboard, in addition to their fare. This initiative makes it easier for travellers to include their pets on holidays, marking a first in Australian aviation history.

First Flights Took Off Last Week

Virgin Australia will operate Australia’s first pet-friendly flights between Melbourne and the Gold Coast, and Melbourne and the Sunshine Coast. Flights launched on Thursday, 16 October 2025, offering pet owners more flexibility when planning family trips with their furry companions.

Nick Rohrlach, CEO of Velocity Frequent Flyer, said “Australians love their pets and value travelling together as one family”. He added “That expanding Points redemptions for Pets in Cabin gives members more reasons to choose Virgin Australia for family travel.”

With nearly 70 percent of households owning pets, Virgin has already seen a strong surge in pet booking demand nationwide.

How the Pets in Cabin Service Works

The service permits small dogs or cats under 8 kilograms, including the carrier, on selected domestic flights. Cats are not currently permitted on the Melbourne – Gold Coast route during the initial rollout phase of the service.

Each eligible flight can carry up to four pets, ensuring comfort and safety for all passengers onboard the aircraft. Pets must travel inside approved soft-sided, leak-proof carriers no larger than 44cm x 26cm x 28cm in size.

Carriers must fit under the seat in front of the owner, and pets cannot be removed during the flight. Owners must provide proof of vaccinations and, for some pets, a vet certificate confirming they are fit to fly safely.

Comfort and Safety for All Passengers

Virgin aircraft feature advanced air filtration systems that remove 99 percent of airborne particles, including pet dander. This ensures guests with allergies can travel comfortably, even when seated near designated pet-friendly rows onboard.

Guests with allergies can request alternative seating in the same cabin class at no additional charge. To book, Velocity members must call the Member Contact Centre to redeem Points for eligible Pets in Cabin flights.

Virgin’s new service redefines family travel, ensuring every member – including four-legged companions, can now fly together comfortably and safely.
