Virgin Australia and Qatar Airways Gain Interim ACCC Approval for Doha Flights

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has granted Virgin Australia and Qatar Airways interim authorisation to operate 28 weekly return flights between Doha and major Australian cities, including Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth, and Sydney. Scheduled to launch in June 2025, these routes promise enhanced connectivity between Australia and the Middle East.

This interim decision enables both airlines to proceed with essential planning, marketing, and operational preparations for the new services. However, the ACCC clarified that final regulatory approval is still required, with a draft determination expected in February 2025.

ACCC Deputy Chair Mick Keogh assured affected passengers that refunds or alternative flight arrangements would be provided at no additional cost should the proposed services fail to secure full approval.

The ACCC is also investigating concerns surrounding the airlines’ wet lease arrangements and the exclusivity of their partnership. Notably, today’s announcement did not address Qatar Airways’ proposed 25% stake acquisition in Virgin Australia, a matter of significant interest in the aviation sector.

Pending final approval, the partnership is anticipated to strengthen competition and offer Australian travelers greater choice and convenience for journeys to and beyond the Middle East.
