Venice is cracking down on overtourism.
From 2025, day-trippers will pay €10 to enter the city on peak dates. Overnight tourists remain exempt—but must still register their stay on the official website.
The fee applies between 8:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., targeting short-term visitors only. Book more than four days ahead to pay just €5 instead of €10. The city trialed the scheme in 2024. Officials say it helped reduce crowd pressure.
This year, the fee is in force on 54 days—almost double last year’s 29. Expect to pay from April 18 to May 4, and every weekend until July’s end. Children under 14, residents, and lagoon island visitors are exempt. So are travelers just passing through Piazzale Roma or Tronchetto.
Tour companies now encourage guests to stay longer and avoid the extra charge. Critics say the fee doesn’t solve Venice’s deeper issues. Protests in 2024 called for better housing, not more tourist control.
Still, the scheme raised over €2.4 million in its first year. Venice’s mayor stands by the plan, calling it a “success” in managing tourist flow.
