United Airlines Moves To Terminal 2 At Singapore Changi Airport

United Airlines has returned to Terminal 2 at Singapore Changi Airport (SIN). The carrier previously operated from Terminal 2 until March 2020, before relocating to Terminal 3 when it resumed operations following the pandemic in early 2022.

United Airlines currently operates two daily flights between Singapore and its hub at San Francisco International Airport (SFO), going head-to-head on the route with fellow Star Alliance member Singapore Airlines.

Just a few months after resuming flights from Singapore, United Airlines upped the frequency of its services to double daily. At the time of the frequency increase, the carrier’s Director of Sales for Greater China, Korea, and Southeast Asia, Walter Dias, said,

“To meet the increasing customer demand, we’ve decided to resume our twice-daily service, which can provide our customers with greater choices and more options between Singapore and San Francisco and beyond with optimal departure and arrival times. Singapore is an important business and leisure destination for United, and we remain committed to serving the Singapore market.”

United Airlines’ flights between Singapore and San Francisco operate with the following schedule:

Flight number Route Departure Arrival
UA1 SFO-SIN 22:55 06:15 (+2 days)
UA2 SIN-SFO 08:45 09:05
UA29 SFO-SIN 11:20 18:45 (+1 day)
UA28 SIN-SFO 21:00 21:20

Flights are operated by the airline’s Boeing 787-9 aircraft. Data from ch-aviation.com shows that the carrier currently has 38 787-9s in its fleet, with a further 100 on order. Each aircraft can carry up to 257 passengers in a four-class configuration – 48 in Polaris Business, 21 in Premium Plus, 39 in Economy Plus, and 149 in Economy.

Terminal 2’s return to operations

Singapore Changi Airport’s Terminal 2 partially reopened after its pandemic shutdown in October 2022. Singapore Airlines was the first to return, with a number of regional flights, followed by airlines such as Air India, Lufthansa, and Malaysia Airlines. United Airlines has now become the twelfth carrier to return to the terminal.

Terminal 2 is still undergoing partial refurbishment, and is expected to be fully operational once more by October 2023, months ahead of the original schedule. Only a handful of airlines are now still left to resume flights at Terminal 2, including All Nippon Airways and Etihad Airways, which are temporarily operating from Terminal 1 and Terminal 3, respectively.

In terms of lounges, Terminal 2 offers a SATS Premier Lounge, just like Terminal 3. Eligible United Airlines passengers will also be able to use Singapore Airlines’ SilverKris Business Class Lounge and KrisFlyer Gold Lounge.

Further expansion on the horizon

Thanks to ongoing redevelopment works, Singapore Changi Airport’s four terminals will have a total passenger capacity of 90 million passengers by 2024, up from 85 million pre-pandemic. The airport’s ambitious Terminal 5 project will also provide an additional capacity of up to 50 million when it opens in the mid-2030

Earlier this week, United Airlines announced significant expansion in Asia, launching routes from San Francisco to Manila (MNL), and from Los Angeles (LAX) to Hong Kong (HKG).
