UK and Spain Reach Historic Agreement on Gibraltar Border

UK and Spain Reach Historic Agreement on Gibraltar Border

Landmark Deal Ends Post-Brexit Dispute

The UK and Spain have signed a “historic” agreement settling Gibraltar’s post-Brexit status. This breakthrough removes the final unresolved Brexit issue, easing the flow of people and goods across the border.

The deal guarantees British sovereignty while ensuring smoother travel and trade between Gibraltar and Spain.

Foreign Secretary David Lammy called it “a practical solution after years of uncertainty.”

Seamless Cross-Border Movement Introduced

Around 15,000 people cross the Gibraltar-Spain border daily—most for work. Under the new deal, they will continue to move freely, with no ID or passport checks.

British and Spanish border officers will jointly conduct passport checks at Gibraltar’s port and airport. This Eurostar-style system avoids physical barriers while maintaining Schengen regulations.

Airport and Port Get Dual Border Controls

The agreement mirrors Eurostar procedures at St Pancras, with dual passport checks for outbound and inbound travellers. Non-resident Britons arriving in Gibraltar must comply with Schengen rules.

If they exceed 90 days in the Schengen zone over 180 days, they could be turned away. Despite this, Gibraltar’s military bases remain under British control and fully autonomous.

Boost to Regional Growth and Cooperation

The deal enhances cross-border collaboration on taxation, customs, and trade regulation. Spain and the UK agreed to share information and consult on economic development projects. A joint financial mechanism will also support regional employment and cohesion.

European Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič called it a “truly historic milestone” for all parties involved.

Political Reactions and Next Steps

Gibraltar’s Chief Minister, Fabian Picardo, and Spanish Foreign Minister, José Manuel Albares, praised the deal. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer congratulated Picardo and emphasised the deal’s long-term stability.

Legal texts will now be finalised and submitted for ratification.

Šefčovič said he was “absolutely convinced” the agreement would be ratified successfully.

A New Era for Gibraltar and the Region

The agreement guarantees Gibraltar’s continued British status and secures the rights of locals. It also removes the last hard border in continental Europe.

Albares stated: “The last wall will disappear; we guarantee free movement of people and goods.”

This marks a significant shift in UK-EU cooperation, opening a new chapter in their relationship.
