Turkish Airlines has officially announced plans to begin flights to Auckland, marking its first foray into New Zealand and further strengthening its presence in the Australasian market. The new route will operate via Singapore, mirroring the airline’s Istanbul-Melbourne service.
Speaking at the Turkish Airlines Management Summit 2025 in Antalya, Chairman Ahmet Bolat shared that the Istanbul-Auckland flights will include a stop at Singapore’s Changi Airport, providing travelers with access to premium airport lounges. Business class passengers and Star Alliance Gold members – including Air New Zealand’s Airpoints Gold and Elite cardholders – will be welcomed at the lounge during the layover before continuing their journey.
Nonstop Flights Under Consideration
While the initial Istanbul-Auckland route will include a Singapore stopover, Turkish Airlines is also exploring the possibility of introducing nonstop flights. The airline’s acquisition of ultra-long-range Airbus A350-1000 aircraft will enable such direct services. These aircraft are expected to debut on the Istanbul-Sydney route in late 2026, eliminating the current stop in Kuala Lumpur and offering a 17-hour nonstop journey.
The A350-1000s will feature Crystal business class suites, offering lie-flat beds and sliding privacy doors, but the airline has ruled out reintroducing its ‘Comfort Class’ premium economy product.
Expanding Competition on the Auckland-Singapore Route
The introduction of Turkish Airlines to the Auckland-Singapore route adds competition to a market currently dominated by Air New Zealand and Singapore Airlines. Aviation expert Irene King predicts this will likely lead to lower fares and a broader range of departure times and connection options for Kiwi travelers.
“It’s been a while since a competitive alternative has entered the New Zealand market. We can expect very low entry prices as Turkish Airlines seeks to attract interest in their offering,” King said.
This development could also spur other airlines to enter the New Zealand market, as seen when Delta’s arrival prompted additional U.S. carriers to launch services.
A Global Leader in Connectivity
Turkish Airlines already holds the title of flying to more destinations than any other airline, connecting passengers to over 350 cities across 130 countries. The Auckland service will enhance the airline’s Australasian network, complementing its flights to Sydney and Melbourne.
Bilal Eksi, Turkish Airlines CEO, previously indicated that the Auckland route could launch as early as 2026, as the airline continues to expand its fleet and long-haul capabilities.
The addition of Turkish Airlines to Auckland’s aviation landscape aligns with broader strategic possibilities. King highlighted the potential for Auckland to develop as a major hub for flights between South America and Asia, positioning New Zealand as a key player in global air travel.
Turkish Airlines’ entry is expected to support local tourism, provide Kiwi travelers with greater options, and bolster New Zealand’s economic connectivity to Europe, Asia, and beyond.
The countdown to the first Istanbul-Auckland flight is officially underway, promising exciting opportunities for travelers and the aviation industry alike.
