Thailand Lifts Long Standing Afternoon Alcohol Ban to Boost Tourism
Eased Restrictions to Support Visitor Demand
Thailand has temporarily lifted its decades old afternoon alcohol sales ban to help stimulate tourism. Approved venues can now sell alcohol from 14:00 to 17:00 under a six-month pilot programme.
The 1972 ban originally aimed to prevent government employees from drinking during work hours. The rule has long frustrated visitors who enjoy Thailand’s nightlife and its famous beach party culture. The change comes just days before Christmas and New Year, which are peak tourist periods.
New Alcohol Sales Framework Introduced
Thailand now permits alcohol sales from 11:00 to midnight for the next 180 days. A government committee will review the pilot programme and assess its social and economic impact.
Those who previously breached the afternoon ban faced fines of up to 10,000 baht. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul aims to revive tourism after years of political and economic disruption. Officials say social norms have changed, making the decades old concerns less relevant today.
Alcohol Rules Updated for Travellers
Thailand continues to refine its alcohol regulations to guide visitors more clearly. Travellers now receive structured information about where and when they can buy or consume alcohol.
The updated rules aim to support tourism growth while maintaining public health and social responsibility. Clear communication helps visitors enjoy Thailand safely and reduces confusion across hospitality venues.
Detailed Sales Hours and Venue Guidelines
From 3 December 2025, alcohol may be purchased in three daily periods. Sales are allowed from 11:00 to 14:00, 14:00 to 17:00, and 17:00 to 24:00.
The afternoon window operates under a six-month trial to measure its wider impact. Hotels, licensed entertainment venues, and international airport terminals may serve alcohol beyond these hours.
These venues must operate within the conditions of their permits to ensure regulatory compliance.
Supporting Tourism While Maintaining Oversight
The revised alcohol framework gives businesses more stability during Thailand’s peak travel seasons. It also strengthens visitor awareness and supports safer consumption practices nationwide.
By balancing flexibility with oversight, Thailand aims to enhance tourism without compromising responsibility.
