Spain: EES Passport Control Zone to Be Finished at Murcia Airport by May 1

Corvera International Airport in the Region of Murcia, Spain, will be equipped for the EES system by May 1, ahead of the scheduled October launch. Despite initial plans for completion by mid-March, Elecnor, the contracted company, has faced delays, pushing the deadline back by six weeks. The airport management has extended the project deadline without additional compensation to Elecnor.

Notable Changes at Murcia Airport by Late April:
The passport area will be redesigned to accommodate new equipment, replacing manual check-ins with Automated Border Control (ABC) eGates utilizing biometric data for traveler identification.

Flow of passengers will be restructured, and closed-circuit television (CCTV) surveillance will be installed. By October 6, travelers, including third-country nationals, will need to navigate these modifications to use the airport for entry and exit.

Summer 2024 Flight Schedule:
Corvera Airport anticipates an average of 80 weekly flights during the peak season, aiming to enhance connectivity with Galicia, France, and Italy. As of late March, the airport will serve 22 destinations across six countries, including Belgium, Ireland, Morocco, Portugal, the UK, and domestic routes within Spain.

In 2023, Corvera Airport hosted 877,796 passengers, reflecting its growing importance in the region’s air transportation network.
