Southwest Adds First-Ever Bag Fees
Checked Bags Will Now Cost Passengers
Southwest Airlines has officially ended its iconic “Bags Fly Free” policy. Starting May 28, passengers will pay $35 for the first checked bag and $45 for the second.
This marks a major shift in the airline’s pricing model, aligning it more closely with industry norms. Additional checked bags will cost $150 each, following the trend of other major U.S. carriers.
Not All Travelers Will Pay
Some customers will still benefit from free checked bags, depending on their fare or status. Business Select and Choice Extra fares include two free checked bags. A-List Preferred members also receive two free bags, while A-List members get one free.
Chase Rapid Rewards cardholders also qualify for one complimentary checked bag per flight. These benefits extend to up to eight companions on the same booking.
Hawaiian Inter-Island Flights Remain an Exception
Southwest will not apply standard bag fees to inter-island flights within Hawaii. Passengers flying between Hawaiian islands will still enjoy free or discounted baggage, depending on eligibility.
However, this exception does not apply to flights between the mainland U.S. and Hawaii.
More Changes Are Coming
This change is part of a broader effort by Southwest to boost its financial performance. In March, the airline announced major initiatives following investor pressure.
Other updates include red-eye flights, assigned seating, and extra legroom options. These changes aim to modernise the experience while generating new revenue streams.
A Historic Shift for the Airline
For over five decades, free checked bags were a core selling point for Southwest. This move marks the first time in company history that all passengers will face baggage fees.
It’s a big change, but one Southwest hopes will help it stay competitive and profitable.
