Qantas is rolling out a cutting-edge luggage tracking system utilising Apple’s AirTag technology, aiming to make it easier for passengers to recover misplaced baggage. The system is expected to go live in the coming weeks, positioning Qantas alongside other airlines like Air Canada, Air New Zealand, and United Airlines, which have already embraced AirTags for baggage tracking.
How It Works
Apple AirTags allow users to share the location of their tagged items temporarily, enabling airlines and baggage handling teams to join the search for missing luggage. This system leverages Apple’s extensive Find My network, supported by over one billion Apple devices, to detect and report the approximate location of AirTagged items using Bluetooth technology.
Apple has collaborated with select airlines to integrate Find My item locations into their customer service processes, streamlining the recovery of delayed or lost bags.
Features and Benefits
- Location Sharing: Travelers can share a link to their AirTagged luggage via Apple’s Find My app. This link can be accessed through the app on Apple devices or via a web page on non-Apple devices, displaying the last known location of the bag.
- Interactive Maps: Real-time tracking is available, showing the AirTag’s position on a dynamic map.
- Contact Sharing: Users can include their phone number and email address to facilitate direct communication with those who find their lost items.
- Privacy & Security: Links expire after seven days or once the item is returned. Access to shared locations is restricted to a small number of authorised airline personnel who must authenticate through an Apple account or a verified partner email address.
Industry Adoption
United Airlines has already incorporated AirTag support into its mobile app, enabling travelers to track and report missing baggage seamlessly. SITA, a global provider of baggage management systems, is also updating its WorldTracer platform to support AirTag location sharing, benefiting over 500 airlines and ground handlers worldwide.
Qantas Bag Tags vs. AirTags
It’s important to differentiate Apple’s AirTags from Qantas’s branded bag tags. While Qantas bag tags are available to frequent flyers and highlight the traveler’s status, they do not offer tracking capabilities and are primarily used for identification purposes.
With this integration, Qantas is set to enhance its baggage recovery process, providing passengers with greater confidence and control over their belongings during travel.
