Qantas Confirms 2027 Launch for Project Sunrise Flights

Qantas has announced that its highly anticipated Project Sunrise flights will begin in early 2027. The airline will introduce nonstop ultra-long-haul routes from Sydney to London and New York, using specially configured Airbus A350-1000 aircraft.

Project Sunrise Aircraft Arrive in 2026

CEO Vanessa Hudson confirmed that Qantas will receive its first Airbus A350-1000 aircraft in late 2026. The airline requires at least three aircraft to launch daily nonstop services to either New York or London.

“Once we have three aircraft, we can begin daily services from Sydney,” Hudson stated.

Qantas has delayed the launch twice, initially planning for 2025 but adjusting due to aircraft design revisions. While waiting for the full fleet, the first A350-1000 will operate shorter routes, including Sydney–Auckland.

Qantas to Maintain Key One-Stop Routes

Despite launching nonstop flights, Qantas will continue operating major one-stop routes like Sydney–Singapore–London and Sydney–Auckland–New York. These connecting flights offer scalability, flexibility, and higher passenger capacity.

“Nonstop flights target premium travelers, while one-stop routes serve larger passenger volumes,” Qantas confirmed.

The airline will keep using Airbus A380s on Singapore routes, ensuring passengers have both nonstop and one-stop travel options.

Ultra-Long-Haul Aircraft Prioritise Comfort

Qantas will equip each Airbus A350-1000 with only 238 seats, making it one of the lowest-density A350-1000 configurations globally. This premium-heavy design focuses on passenger comfort during 20+ hour flights.

“Project Sunrise is a strategic investment in long-term network resilience,” Qantas stated.

These aircraft will operate full payload flights—carrying passengers, luggage, and freight—even under route restrictions. Their flexibility allows Qantas to adjust routes based on demand, airspace restrictions, or geopolitical changes.

A New Era for Qantas Long-Haul Travel

Project Sunrise marks a significant shift in global air travel, making Qantas a leader in ultra-long-haul connectivity. The airline aims to enhance passenger experience while maintaining strong network flexibility.

With deliveries starting in late 2026, Qantas expects commercial operations for Project Sunrise flights to launch by mid-2027, opening a new era of nonstop long-haul travel.
