Princess Juliana International Airport (SXM) celebrated the grand reopening of its modernised terminal with a regal ceremony led by Her Royal Highness Princess Beatrix of the Netherlands. The event, rich with historical significance, commemorated nearly 80 years since the airport’s inauguration by Princess Beatrix’s mother, Princess Juliana, in 1944.
During the ceremony, Princess Beatrix unveiled a commemorative plaque, symbolising the continuity of a legacy spanning generations.
A Gateway Reborn
The terminal reconstruction follows the devastation caused by Hurricanes Irma and Maria, which severely disrupted tourism and economic activity on Sint Maarten. With $92 million in financing from the World Bank-managed Sint Maarten Reconstruction, Resilience, and Recovery Trust Fund, along with a $50 million loan from the European Investment Bank (EIB), the airport has been rebuilt to modern standards.
The upgrades include energy-efficient systems, enhanced safety and security measures, and state-of-the-art features such as passenger boarding bridges, baggage handling systems, and digital signage. The revamped airport is designed to be more resilient against future extreme weather events, aligning with the “build back better” philosophy.
A Symbol of Resilience
Airport CEO Brian Mingo highlighted the reopening as a pivotal moment for the island. “This is more than just a terminal—it’s a testament to our resilience and dedication. The new facility stands stronger, ready to deliver an exceptional passenger experience while connecting cultures across the Caribbean and beyond.”
Prime Minister Dr. Luc Mercelina echoed these sentiments, emphasising the collective effort that brought the project to completion: “This achievement reflects the spirit of Sint Maarten—a community that rises above challenges to achieve greatness. Today, we open not just a gateway to our island but also to endless possibilities for growth and connection.”
Economic Lifeline and Regional Hub
The reconstructed airport restores its pre-hurricane capacity and enhances its role as a critical connection hub for the Caribbean. According to World Bank Director for the Caribbean Lilia Burunciuc, the airport’s reopening represents “a milestone in Sint Maarten’s recovery journey,” providing a vital boost to tourism and local business opportunities.
European Investment Bank Vice-President Robert de Groot expressed optimism about the airport’s impact on regional connectivity and economic resilience: “This project not only enhances Sint Maarten’s infrastructure but also strengthens its ability to thrive in a changing climate.”
A Legacy Continued
As Princess Beatrix officiated the reopening, her presence underscored the historical and cultural importance of the airport. Decades after its original inauguration by her mother, Princess Juliana, the airport now embarks on a new chapter as a symbol of Sint Maarten’s strength, growth, and commitment to a sustainable future.
