Pompeii Introduces Daily Visitor Cap to Protect Historic Site

The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Pompeii has implemented a new cap of 20,000 daily visitors which started November 15, 2024. This decision follows a record-breaking 36,000 tourists on the first Sunday of October, when entry was free.

Nearly 4 million people visited Pompeii in 2023—a 33% increase compared to the previous year—surpassing pre-pandemic levels. Despite the cap, visitors are unlikely to face restrictions often, as numbers exceeding 20,000 have historically occurred only during free-admission Sundays or a few paid-entry days annually.

Entry tickets start at €18, allowing tourists to explore the ancient Roman city while safeguarding its preservation for future generations.
