Lufthansa Group Bans Power Bank Use Onboard

Lufthansa Group Bans Power Bank Use Onboard from January 2026

The Lufthansa Group updated its onboard safety regulations in January, introducing stricter rules for power banks and e-cigarettes.

Since 15 January 2026, passengers may no longer use or charge power banks during flights operated by any Lufthansa Group airline. The ban applies across the entire group, including Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, ITA Airways, Eurowings, Edelweiss, and Air Dolomiti. The update aligns the group with current safety guidance from international aviation authorities.

What Passengers Can and Cannot Do
  • Each passenger may carry a maximum of two power banks in their carry-on baggage.
  • Passengers must store power banks under the seat, in the seat pocket, or on their person at all times. Storing power banks or e-cigarettes in overhead compartments is strictly prohibited.
  • Passengers may not charge devices using a power bank during the flight.
  • They may also not charge power banks using onboard power outlets.
  • For safety reasons, airlines do not allow power banks or e-cigarettes in checked baggage.
Battery Limits and Medical Exemptions

The maximum permitted battery capacity without approval is 100 watt-hours (Wh). Passengers must request airline approval in advance for power banks between 100 Wh and 160 Wh. Approved medical devices remain exempt from the usage restrictions.

A Unified Safety Approach

Lufthansa Group said the regulation ensures consistent handling of lithium battery devices across all its airlines. Clear, uniform procedures help cabin crews manage potential fire risks more effectively. The policy follows recommendations from EASA, FAA, IATA, and ICAO, reinforcing overall flight safety.
