IndiGo Launches First Long-Haul Routes

IndiGo, India’s leading budget airline, has announced its first long-haul routes to Amsterdam and Manchester. The airline will operate three weekly flights from Delhi to each city starting in July 2025. This marks a significant milestone in IndiGo’s expansion into the long-haul market. The new routes will use Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, leased from Norse Atlantic.

Expanding Long-Haul Operations

IndiGo’s first long-haul flights will connect India to Europe, strengthening ties with the UK and Netherlands. The carrier will begin flying from Delhi to both Amsterdam and Manchester. IndiGo has been preparing for this move by leasing four Dreamliners. This allows them to establish their presence in Europe while waiting for the delivery of new aircraft like the Airbus A321 XLR and A350-900. These will join IndiGo’s fleet by 2027.

IndiGo’s CEO, Pieter Elbers, expressed excitement about the new routes. He emphasised the importance of the connections between India, the UK, and the Netherlands. Both countries have strong business and tourism links with India, as well as large Indian diaspora communities. Elbers also pointed out the significance of direct flights between India and these key European cities.

Strengthening Global Connectivity

IndiGo has been enhancing its network with codeshare agreements with European carriers like British Airways and Virgin Atlantic. These partnerships improve the airline’s reach and convenience for passengers flying from India to Europe. The new flights will also boost economic relations, particularly with the growing discussions around a UK-India trade deal.

Manchester Airport’s Chris Woodroofe highlighted the importance of the new route. It will be the only direct flight from the north of the UK to India. This service will serve the region’s large Indian heritage population and strengthen trade links.

IndiGo’s expansion into long-haul flights is a major step toward becoming a global aviation leader.
