Germany Ends Administrative Visa Appeals from July 1

No More Remonstration for Rejected Visas

Starting July 1, 2025, Germany will abolish administrative appeals for rejected visa applications. Applicants will no longer be able to file a remonstration after a visa rejection.

Instead, they must either file a formal court appeal or submit a new application. This change applies globally to both Schengen and national visas.

Pilot Project Shows Faster Processing

Germany tested the new process from June 2023 in selected visa offices. The trial revealed staff could process more visas without handling appeals.

This led to shorter waiting times and more efficient visa approvals overall.

Staff Resources Shifted to Applications

Removing the remonstration process freed up staff for active application reviews. Officials say this change benefits all applicants by increasing capacity and speeding decisions.

Judicial review remains an option for those wishing to contest a visa denial. Applicants can also reapply at any time with a revised visa application.

New Digital System Supports Applicants

Since January 2025, visa applicants can apply online via the Consular Services Portal. This platform offers step-by-step digital guidance to avoid incomplete submissions.

Early feedback shows improved application quality and fewer delays.

Why Germany Made This Change

The remonstration process wasn’t a legal requirement—it was a voluntary extra step.

The government believes focusing resources on application processing better serves all travelers.
