Aviation history is being made as Air Greenland’s flight #GL781 becomes the first Airbus A330 to connect Copenhagen to the newly inaugurated Nuuk Airport in Greenland. Departing at 10:45 CEST and landing at 12:35 WGT, this flight symbolizes a new era for Greenland’s connectivity and tourism.
The new international airport, located in Nuuk, features a state-of-the-art 2,200-meter (7,217-foot) runway, capable of accommodating larger aircraft. This upgrade significantly enhances Greenland’s accessibility, opening up the Arctic territory to greater global connections.
Nuuk Airport will serve as the base for Air Greenland, which will operate its advanced Airbus A330neo on the Copenhagen route. The airport’s modern infrastructure can handle up to 800 passengers an hour, making it a gateway for both international and regional flights. Beyond Denmark, the airport will also facilitate connections to Reykjavik, Iceland, and other destinations, further integrating Greenland into the global travel network.
Greenland already welcomes around 130,000 annual visitors, arriving by cruise ships or flights. This number is expected to increase as the region becomes more accessible, offering opportunities for adventure tourism and cultural exploration in the Arctic.
Starting in June 2025, United Airlines plans to introduce seasonal non-stop flights from Newark, New Jersey, to Nuuk. These flights, lasting just over four hours, will provide a direct link between North America and Greenland.
The opening of Nuuk Airport not only represents a significant milestone in Greenland’s infrastructure but also positions the territory as a growing hub for Arctic tourism and international travel. With enhanced connections, larger aircraft, and expanded destinations, Nuuk Airport is set to transform Greenland’s role in global aviation.
