European Airlines Agree to End Misleading Environmental Claims
Twenty-one European airlines agreed to change how they present environmental claims. The European Commission says the changes will protect consumers from misleading “green” messages.
The European Commission launched the action after BEUC filed a major complaint in 2023. Officials found airlines created false impressions about their environmental impact. Many claims suggested passengers could neutralise flight emissions by paying extra fees. Authorities said these claims misled consumers and overstated climate benefits.
The EU criticised airlines for using vague terms like “green” or “sustainable” without strong scientific proof. Some airlines mentioned climate goals without timelines or measurable commitments.
Airlines Commit to Major Changes in Their Green Messaging
The agreement requires airlines to stop claiming that passengers can offset emissions from specific flights. Airlines must stop implying that climate fees or sustainable fuel payments make flights environmentally neutral.
Airlines must explain sustainable aviation fuel clearly and avoid absolute labels like “eco-friendly.” They must support environmental claims with verified scientific evidence. They must also show emissions calculations transparently. Flight comparisons must include clear explanations of their methods.
Authorities Will Monitor Compliance Closely
EU consumer authorities will monitor each airline’s progress. Airlines that fail to comply may face enforcement actions. These actions may include investigations, penalties, or legal measures.
BEUC welcomed the agreement and said it will reduce greenwashing in aviation. The group said airlines must stop giving passengers the false impression that flying is sustainable today.
Major European Carriers Commit to the Agreement
The 21 participating airlines include Air France, KLM, Lufthansa, Ryanair, Wizz Air, Finnair, EasyJet, SAS, Swiss, TAP, Volotea, Vueling and others. Consumer groups say the agreement marks a major shift toward honest climate communication in aviation.
