Non-Stop Calgary to Abu Dhabi Flights Launch November 3
A new non-stop route between Calgary and Abu Dhabi will launch on November 3, creating the only direct connection between Western Canada and the United Arab Emirates.
Etihad Airways will operate four weekly flights between the two cities, marking a major milestone for Calgary International Airport and expanding Alberta’s global reach.
A Direct Link Between Western Canada and the Middle East
Calgary Airports President and CEO Chris Dinsdale says the new service goes far beyond simply connecting two cities. The route links travellers from Calgary, Alberta, and across Canada to Etihad’s extensive global network.
Through Abu Dhabi, passengers can seamlessly connect to destinations across the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. Abu Dhabi serves as a powerful global hub for business and leisure travel.
Airport officials expect strong demand from both corporate and tourism markets. Nearly 20 million passengers travelled through Calgary International Airport last year, underlining the region’s growing international demand.
Boost for Tourism and Calgary’s $6 Billion Vision
Tourism leaders say the Abu Dhabi route will help position Calgary as a global destination. Tourism Calgary aims to double visitor spending to $6 billion by 2035.
International long-haul visitors play a crucial role in achieving that goal. They stay longer, spend more, and contribute significantly to the local economy. With direct access to the UAE and beyond, Calgary strengthens its appeal to high-value global travellers.
Strengthening Canada–UAE Economic Ties
The new route arrives as Canada and Alberta deepen economic relationships with the UAE. Prime Minister Mark Carney signed a historic investment pact between the two countries last November. Around the same time, Alberta opened an international office in Abu Dhabi to strengthen trade and investment ties.
Alberta’s jobs and economy minister, Joseph Schow, called the route a “massive opportunity” to expand tourism, trade, and investment. Trade between Alberta and the UAE exceeded $300 million in 2024, with more than $200 million in exports from Alberta alone.
Energy Hubs Connected by Air
Etihad executives highlight the natural alignment between the two cities. Both Calgary and Abu Dhabi rank among the world’s major energy hubs, driving innovation and global investment.
The new air link creates stronger collaboration opportunities between the regions. Travellers will also benefit from easy access to world-class experiences – from Abu Dhabi’s year-round sunshine and cultural attractions to Alberta’s iconic Canadian Rockies.
Operated by Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner
Etihad will operate the route using its Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft. At approximately 14 hours, the service will rank among the airline’s longest non-stop flights.
Calgary becomes the second Canadian destination in Etihad’s North American expansion strategy, joining Toronto and six U.S. cities already served.
With four weekly departures beginning November 3, the Calgary – Abu Dhabi route positions Western Canada at the heart of a rapidly expanding global aviation network.
