ETIAS mobile app to launch mid-2025

EU Prepares ETIAS Mobile App Ahead of 2025 Launch

With less than a year remaining until the European Union (EU) implements the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS), the EU authorities have disclosed the development of a mobile app for this system. The app, which will facilitate ETIAS applications for travelers from visa-free countries, will support all official EU languages and be available on both iOS and Android platforms.

App Features and Security Measures

According to eu-LISA, the EU Agency managing large-scale IT systems like ETIAS, the app will not use biometric data for identity verification. Instead, it will implement two-factor authentication (2FA) along with other security measures in line with ETIAS regulations. Travelers will be able to pay the ETIAS fee through the app, with payment methods currently being finalized.

Compatibility with Older Devices

Eu-LISA has assured that the app will be compatible with most mobile devices, including older smartphone models. For users unable to access the app, applications can be submitted through the ETIAS website, which will support a wide range of browsers and older operating system versions.

Communication Strategy

The European Commission plans to launch a comprehensive communication campaign to inform travelers about the ETIAS requirement and app usage. This campaign will begin once the app development is complete. European Commission Spokesperson for Home Affairs, Anitta Hipper, emphasised that support will be available for applicants facing difficulties with the application process. Additionally, travelers can authorise third parties or commercial intermediaries to submit applications on their behalf.
