Eastern Airways Halts Flights as UK Regional Airline Faces Collapse
Operations Suspended and Flights Cancelled
Eastern Airways has suspended all operations, putting hundreds of jobs at risk and leaving passengers stranded across the UK and Europe. The airline filed a notice of intention to appoint an administrator after multiple cancellations, including flights between Teesside and Aberdeen.
The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) confirmed the suspension and urged passengers not to travel to airports. A CAA spokesperson said customers should visit the regulator’s website for updates and make alternate travel arrangements.
Departure boards across UK airports showed widespread cancellations, including flights from Newquay, Aberdeen, Teesside, and Wick.
Legal Protection and Possible Insolvency
The notice to appoint administrators gives Eastern Airways up to ten days of protection from creditors. During this period, the airline may explore rescue options, restructure, or prepare for insolvency proceedings.
The Independent reported that Eastern has already returned its aircraft to leasing partners, signalling an end to its 28-year run. Founded in 1997, the airline operated out of Humberside Airport and served destinations across the UK, Ireland, and Denmark.
It also provided government-supported flights from Wick John O’Groats Airport, essential for northern Scotland communities.
Support for Stranded Passengers
The CAA advised affected passengers to seek refunds or alternate transport by rail, coach, or other airlines. Several UK rail operators, including LNER, ScotRail, and TransPennine Express, offered free standard travel for staff and passengers.
Scottish carrier Loganair announced special airfares for stranded travellers on flights between Aberdeen, Kirkwall, and Sumburgh. Passengers who paid with credit or debit cards were urged to contact their card issuers for possible chargeback claims.
The CAA reiterated its warning: “Do not go to the airport, as all Eastern Airways flights are cancelled.”
Financial Struggles and Industry Challenges
Eastern Airways faced financial strain following the COVID-19 pandemic and reduced passenger demand. The airline once played a major role in the North Sea oil and gas sector, linking key cities like Aberdeen and Humberside.
It operated routes from East Midlands, Jersey, Manchester, Newcastle, and Southampton, among others. Despite its long history and regional importance, Eastern struggled to recover from industry-wide challenges post-pandemic. With its grounding, one of the UK’s last regional airlines now faces the prospect of permanent closure.
Future Uncertain for Staff and Travellers
Hundreds of employees await clarity as administrators assess the company’s future and potential rescue options. For regional travellers, the loss of Eastern Airways leaves significant gaps in connectivity across northern and rural UK routes.
The airline’s collapse marks another setback for Britain’s struggling regional aviation sector amid rising costs and shrinking demand. While recovery efforts continue, many now question the sustainability of small regional carriers in today’s competitive aviation market.
