Easter Air Strikes in Greece and Italy Threaten Travel Plans

Travellers heading to Greece or Italy this week could face disruption, as strike action hits key air travel hubs. In Greece, air traffic controllers plan to walk out for 24 hours on Wednesday, 9 April. In Italy, EasyJet cabin crew will strike for four hours the same day, from 10:30am to 2:30pm local time.

Greek Strike Could Ground All Commercial Flights

The Greek walkout was called by public sector union ADEDY, despite a court ruling it unlawful. If it goes ahead, only medical, military, humanitarian, and emergency flights will be permitted. Commercial flights in and out of Greece may be cancelled or severely delayed.

ADEDY is demanding the reinstatement of holiday bonuses previously cut under austerity measures. They also want wage increases and government action on the housing crisis. Greek air traffic controllers warn the system is under strain from staff shortages and outdated technology.

Airlines such as Aegean and Olympic Air are offering free flight changes or credit vouchers for passengers booked on Wednesday. However, the strike could still be blocked by a court decision before the walkout begins.

EasyJet Cabin Crew to Strike in Italy

EasyJet flights in Italy will also be affected, as cabin crew prepare to strike on Wednesday, 9 April. The four-hour action will hit flights to and from Milan and Naples, during one of the busiest travel weeks of the year. The strike is being led by major Italian transport unions FILT, CGIL and UIL, over ongoing disputes on pay and working conditions.

EasyJet said it is working to minimise disruption. The airline recently faced a similar walkout by pilots in March, highlighting growing unrest in the European aviation sector.

What Travellers Should Do

If you’re flying to or from Greece or Italy this week, check your flight status regularly. Allow extra time at the airport and explore alternative travel options if possible. Easter travel demand is high, and the strikes could create widespread delays or cancellations across Europe.
