Christchurch–Adelaide Flights Take Off

Christchurch–Adelaide Flights Take Off as Air New Zealand Expands Trans-Tasman Network

The airline strengthens ties between South Australia and New Zealand’s South Island with a new direct route.

Air New Zealand celebrates a milestone by launching its first Christchurch – Adelaide service, which returned to Christchurch on 28 October 2025. The inaugural flight departed 27 October, directly linking New Zealand’s South Island with South Australia for the first time.

The seasonal service operates twice weekly on Mondays and Fridays through 27 March 2026, offering around 15,000 seats this season. Air New Zealand uses a narrowbody Airbus A320/321neo to provide convenience for South Islanders and attract Australians to explore the South Island.

Strengthening Tourism and Regional Connections

Lucy Hall, General Manager Short Haul, says “The route strengthens tourism and connections between South Australia and New Zealand’s South Island.” She adds the flights help Australians experience South Island food, wine, adventure, and remarkable natural landscapes throughout the season.

Cantabrians also gain easier access to Australia’s most popular destinations for holidays, events, and visiting friends and family. Christchurch Airport Chief Executive Justin Watson says “The service supports regional partnerships and encourages cross-Tasman exploration during the summer.”

Adelaide Welcomes Its First Direct Christchurch Connection

Brenton Cox, Adelaide Airport Managing Director, calls the launch a milestone meeting strong demand between the two regions this year. Nearly 50,000 people travel yearly between Adelaide and New Zealand’s South Island, mostly for leisure or family visits, he says.

The new direct flights provide seamless travel, making it easier for passengers to reach world-class destinations across both countries. South Australian Tourism Minister Zoe Bettison says “The service boosts Adelaide’s connectivity and encourages more visitors from New Zealand annually.”

Supporting Growth on Both Sides of the Tasman

Tourism Minister Louise Upston praises the route for strengthening regional economies and supporting growth across both countries’ tourism sectors. She says “Direct flights make travel simpler and more convenient while helping both nations attract more visitors each year.”

The Christchurch–Adelaide service demonstrates Air New Zealand’s commitment to expanding its trans-Tasman network and improving connectivity for summer travel.
