Chinese Airlines Push Back Against US Over Airspace Dispute
Chinese airlines are challenging the United States in a growing dispute over access to Russian airspace.
The US is considering banning or restricting Chinese carriers from flying direct routes that pass over Russia. American airlines argue this gives Chinese competitors an unfair advantage since US carriers must avoid Russian airspace due to sanctions.
US Airlines Claim Competitive Disadvantage
Since 2022, US airlines have been banned from Russian airspace following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. This restriction forces them to fly longer routes, increasing fuel costs and travel time on every flight to Asia.
US carriers have urged the Department of Transportation (DOT) to impose similar limits on Chinese airlines.
Chinese Airlines Defend Their Operations
Six Chinese carriers have formally responded to the US proposal, calling the move unfair and disruptive to passengers. China Eastern stated that any ban would “harm the public interest” and disrupt travel for about 4,400 passengers.
The airline highlighted potential impacts during major holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas, when travel demand surges.
DOT Reviews Public Feedback
The DOT opened public comments to assess industry and consumer opinions before issuing a final decision. Officials acknowledged that using the most efficient route offers airlines a competitive advantage through shorter flight times and lower costs.
The dispute continues to raise tensions in an already strained US-China aviation relationship.
