China Grants British Passport Holders 30-Day Visa-Free

China Grants British Passport Holders 30-Day Visa-Free Entry from February 2026

British passport holders can now travel to China for up to 30 days without a visa. The new policy came into effect on February 1, 2026.

The agreement applies to both tourism and business travel. It removes one of the biggest barriers British travellers previously faced when visiting China. The announcement followed discussions during Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s visit to Beijing.

What the 30-Day Visa-Free Access Means

Under the new arrangement, British citizens can enter China without applying for a visa in advance. Travellers can stay for up to 30 days per visit.

Previously, British applicants had to complete a complex visa process. This included submitting biometric data and paying fees of at least £130. The removal of paperwork, appointments, and costs is expected to significantly simplify travel planning.

Aligning the UK with Other Major European Nations

The new policy brings the UK in line with more than 50 other countries whose citizens already enjoy visa-free access to China. These include France and Germany.

The agreement is seen as a step toward strengthening economic and tourism ties between the UK and China.

A Boost for Tourism and Business Travel

The removal of visa barriers is widely expected to trigger a surge in travel demand. For many British visitors, the previous application process was considered costly and cumbersome.

With visa-free access now in place, China becomes a far more accessible option for short breaks, guided tours, and corporate travel.

The February 1, 2026 start date marks a significant shift in UK–China travel relations, opening the door to easier and more spontaneous trips for British passport holders.
