Changi Airport Group has inked a deal to trial autonomous buses at Singapore Changi Airport.

It has tapped SATS Airport Services Pte Ltd to start a proof of concept on driverlesss buses.

It will be initially used to transport airport staff around airside locations.

The initial two-year collaboration is co-funded under the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS)’s Aviation Development Fund (ADF).

The aim of the ADF is to leverage technology to streamline transport and a host of other sectors like urban living, government services and businesses.

The POC begins in the third-quarter of 2024 to assess the self-driving capabilities of the autonomous and test safety and reliability.

It will be monitored by an on-board safety driver.

It will begin with a basic trial and then progress to a live operational environment.

“This initiative presents the opportunity to develop the operating model for autonomous bus deployment in a live environment,” said Henry Low, COO of SATS.

“This partnership furthers SATS Group’s vision of transforming aviation hub handling through digitalisation and automation.”
