Canada issues US travel warning for LGBTQ travelers

Canada has updated its US travel advisory, warning citizens of the possible impact of anti-LGBTQ legislation across several states.

Global affairs Canada urges LGBTQ travelers to be wary of state laws as it could affect their travels.

The warning didn’t specify which states.

“Some states have enacted laws and policies that may affect LGBTQI+ travelers. Check relevant state and local laws,” the advisory said.

Foreign laws and customs related to sexual orientation can be very different from those in Canada.”

Around 70 bills with anti-LGBTQI+ components have been enacted this year, the Human Rights Campaign says.

The HRC recently declared a ‘state of emergency’ for LGBTQI+ persons.

Canada’s Deputy PM Chrystia Freeland says advisories are for ‘the interests and safety of every single group of Canadians.’
