Cambodia is gearing up to unveil Techo Takhmao International Airport in Phnom Penh, set to become the ninth largest airport globally. The ambitious US$1.2 billion (R21 billion) project will revolutionise the country’s aviation infrastructure, with the first phase set to handle up to 15 million passengers annually.
The initial phase, scheduled for completion by mid-2025, includes the construction of multiple 3-kilometer-long runways and a single passenger terminal. This marks the beginning of a multi-phase expansion plan designed to significantly increase the airport’s capacity over time.
In the second phase, the airport will gain a second terminal wing, doubling its annual capacity to 30 million passengers. By 2050, phase three will bring the airport’s total capacity to a staggering 50 million passengers per year, matching the scale of Vietnam’s Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City.
Techo Takhmao International Airport isn’t just functional; it’s also a stunning architectural feat. Its design is inspired by Cambodia’s lush jungles, with a steel canopy resembling a tree canopy, supported by columns shaped like tree trunks. Greenery and water features will enhance the airport’s interior, courtyards, and parking areas, offering travelers a uniquely immersive experience.
The airport’s launch aims to bolster Cambodia’s position in Southeast Asia’s aviation market, promoting greater competition and enhancing connectivity for both tourism and trade.
Once operational, Techo Takhmao International will not only cater to growing passenger demand but also serve as a symbol of Cambodia’s development and ambition on the global stage. With its innovative design and expansive capacity, the airport is poised to become a key hub in the region.
