Bournemouth Airport Wins Approval for Major Expansion
Green Light for £50 Million Development
Bournemouth Airport secured council approval for a £50 million expansion, including terminal enhancements, transport upgrades, and significant passenger facility improvements. The project merges existing arrivals and departures into one modern terminal, introducing enhanced baggage, security screening, and customer-focused upgrades completed in planned phases.
Councillors approved the scheme by eight votes to one, following officer recommendations, ensuring long-term growth and improved services for regional travellers.
Economic Growth and Job Creation
The expansion will create at least 230 new direct jobs and generate hundreds more across the wider local Dorset economy. Currently employing 450 staff, Bournemouth Airport also supports 48 destinations, handling 1.1 million passengers last year, achieving a record-breaking milestone.
The neighbouring Aviation Business Park houses 200 businesses, supporting more than 4,000 jobs, reinforcing the airport’s role as a major employer.
Improved Connectivity and Sustainable Transport
Plans include a redesigned transport interchange with better access for buses, taxis, cyclists, and pedestrians, encouraging seamless and sustainable passenger journeys. The airport pledged £500,000 towards a new regular bus service, alongside £60,000 for staff travel incentives promoting greener commuting.
Shared electric bicycles and scooters will further encourage active travel, aligning infrastructure investment with Bournemouth Airport’s commitment to environmental sustainability and regional accessibility.
