Boeing Lands Landmark Orders from Global Carriers, Securing Future of 777X and 787 Programs
Boeing has solidified its leadership in the widebody aircraft market with a series of major orders from top-tier global carriers. The deals, which involve the 777X and 787 Dreamliner programs, signal strong industry confidence in Boeing’s next-generation technology, fuel efficiency, and sustainability efforts. These commitments also reaffirm the company’s long-standing partnerships with key airlines across Asia and the Middle East.
China Airlines: First Taiwanese Carrier to Join the 777X Program
Boeing has signed a deal with China Airlines for ten 777-9 widebody passenger jets and four 777-8F freighters, with options for nine additional aircraft. Deliveries will begin in 2030, making China Airlines the first Taiwanese airline to join the 777X program.
Chairman Kao Shing-hwang, alongside Boeing’s Senior Vice President Brad McMullen, announced the order during a ceremony at the Hyatt Regency near Taoyuan International Airport. Kao emphasised the airline’s interest in Boeing’s cutting-edge technology and fuel efficiency, noting that the new aircraft would serve both long-haul passenger routes like Los Angeles and Frankfurt, and support the carrier’s growing cargo network.
The 777-9s will feature a three-class cabin layout with enhanced comfort and additional Premium Business seating. Meanwhile, the 777-8Fs will build on China Airlines’ existing fleet of 777 freighters, improving operational consistency and cargo-handling efficiency.
Qatar Airways: Largest Boeing Widebody Order in Its History
Qatar Airways has placed a record-breaking order with Boeing, purchasing 130 787 Dreamliners and 30 777-9 aircraft, with options for an additional 50 aircraft. Valued at approximately US$96 billion, the deal marks the largest widebody aircraft order in the airline’s history and a significant milestone for Boeing.
Group CEO Badr Mohammed Al-Meer described the order as a strategic move toward creating the world’s most efficient and sustainable fleet. Qatar Airways has long been a key Boeing partner, and this latest order reinforces its position as a leader in global aviation.
The airline also signed an engine deal with GE Aerospace for more than 400 engines—60 GE9X engines to power the 777-9s and 260 GEnx engines for the Dreamliners—making it GE’s largest-ever widebody engine order. These aircraft and engines will dramatically reduce emissions and fuel consumption, aligning with Qatar Airways’ aggressive environmental targets.
Boeing’s Competitive Edge in Widebody Market
These orders from China Airlines and Qatar Airways underscore Boeing’s resurgence in the long-haul market, particularly in the 777X and 787 families. The 777X, featuring advanced GE9X engines, composite wings, and improved aerodynamics, offers 25% greater fuel efficiency and reduced emissions compared to previous models.
Brad McMullen of Boeing welcomed the continued trust from long-term partners. “These orders represent not only a commitment to our aircraft, but also to the future of sustainable aviation,” he said.
The combined value and scale of these deals signal a strong vote of confidence in Boeing’s vision, capabilities, and role in shaping the next generation of global air travel.
