Birmingham Airport strike warning for travellers

Birmingham air travelers could face disruption this month with airport strike action expected.

Around 100 security officers and terminal technicians employed by Birmingham Airport will begin an all out continuous strike from 18 July.

The Birmingham Airport workers are striking for an improved pay deal.

Workers say recruitment and retention issues at the airport will worsen without a decent pay rise.

Last year, workers received a pay rise of 2.8%, well below the rate of inflation.

This year, they have been offered 7.75% and a one off £850 payment.

This is a further real-terms pay cut, Unite says.

The union’s general secretary Sharon Graham said: “Birmingham Airport expects its low paid workers to swallow a real-terms pay cut after successive attacks on their wages and terms and conditions.”

Unite says airport strikes would impact security and terminal maintenance operations leading to delays.

This could affect flights from TUI, EasyJet, Wizz, Ryanair, Lufthansa and Emirates.

Unite regional officer Sulinder Singh said: “The airport must table a deal our members can accept.”
