Australian citizens will soon be eligible for the US Global Entry and TSA PreCheck programs, enabling faster processing at customs and security checkpoints across American airports. The initiative is set to commence with a trial phase in January 2025, marking a significant step in streamlining travel between Australia and the United States.
What is Global Entry and TSA PreCheck?
Global Entry is the USA’s international trusted traveler program, offering expedited customs processing for pre-approved flyers entering the United States. TSA PreCheck, its domestic counterpart, allows for streamlined security screening on flights within the US.
Trial Phase for Australians
The initial phase of the program will involve 1,000 Australian citizens participating in a trial. To qualify, applicants must:
- Have traveled to the US at least five times within the past 12 months.
- Meet strict eligibility criteria, including a clean criminal record and no violations of customs or immigration laws.
Phase two, expected to follow, will broaden eligibility to all Australian passport holders, removing the minimum travel requirement.
Application Process
Eligible Australians can apply via the US Customs and Border Protection (USCBP) website. The process includes:
- Submitting an online application.
- Completing an Australian background check, facilitated by the Department of Home Affairs.
- Undergoing additional USCBP checks and an in-person interview.
The application fee for Global Entry is $US100 (approx. AUD $160). Australia will also levy a separate fee for local background checks, though this fee will be waived for trial participants. Approved memberships are valid for five years.
Benefits of Global Entry and TSA PreCheck
With Global Entry, travelers can bypass lengthy immigration lines at US international airports by using passport-scanning kiosks for expedited processing. Membership also includes access to TSA PreCheck, which often features:
- Dedicated security lanes.
- No need to remove shoes, laptops, or liquids during screening.
- Faster processing times for domestic and international departures.
Most airlines operating between Australia and the US, including Qantas, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Hawaiian Airlines, and United Airlines, support TSA PreCheck. Jetstar is a notable exception.
Alternative: Mobile Passport Control
While awaiting broader access to Global Entry, Australians can utilise Mobile Passport Control (MPC), a free app that streamlines customs declarations for US arrivals. Travelers can:
- Download the app before travel.
- Create a profile with passport details.
- Submit a digital customs declaration upon arrival.
- Present the receipt at designated MPC lanes for expedited processing.
MPC is available at 30 US airports, including key entry points for Australians such as Los Angeles (LAX), San Francisco (SFO), Honolulu (HNL), and Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW).
Strengthening Australia-US Ties
Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong highlighted the initiative during her visit to Washington D.C., stating:
“This program reflects the closeness and trust between our two nations. It strengthens our friendship and facilitates greater commercial and cultural ties.”
The introduction of Global Entry for Australian travelers is a long-awaited development, promising to enhance convenience and connectivity for frequent flyers. With the trial phase beginning in early 2025, the program is set to simplify travel and deepen bilateral relations between Australia and the United States.
