Amsterdam Considers Full Cruise Ship Ban

Amsterdam Considers Full Cruise Ship Ban as Tourism Rules Tighten

Amsterdam is considering a complete ban on ocean-going cruise ships as part of wider efforts to curb overtourism.

The proposal comes ahead of new tourism restrictions planned for 2026.

City Leaders Push for Stronger Action

Amsterdam’s mayor and city councillors are now openly supporting a total cruise ship ban. Officials say years of debate have failed to adequately reduce the impact of cruise tourism. They argue the city council should take a firm stance and remove cruise ships entirely.

Current plans already aim to restrict cruise traffic significantly. These include limiting port calls to one ship per day and a maximum of 100 visits annually.

The city also plans to relocate the central passenger terminal outside the city by 2035. From 2027, all visiting ships must use shore power to reduce emissions.

City officials now believe a full ban makes more financial and environmental sense. “We are finally going to free Amsterdam from these floating apartment blocks,” said Councillor Rob Hofland.

Decision Expected After Local Elections

The final decision will follow local elections in March and the formation of a new city council. Any policy change will depend on the priorities of the incoming municipal government.

If Amsterdam proceeds with a total ban, cruise lines will likely shift operations to Rotterdam. The port city sits about one hour away by road and already handles large cruise volumes.
