American Airlines raises checked bag fees

American Airlines fliers can expect to pay more for checked bags.

The airline is raising fees from $30 to $35 when checked online through the website.

The fee goes up to $40 for bags checked at the airport.

A second checked bag rises $5 to $45 in both cases.

It’s actually the first checked bag increase American has imposed for nearly six years.

American Airlines AAdvantage members will still get free checked bags on American Airlines flights.

AAdvantage credit cardmembers also get a first checked bag free of charge on domestic flights as well as premium passengers.

It comes as the airline made a number of tweaks to its AAdvantage loyalty program.

American is also changing the way it calculates fees for overweight or oversized bags.

When bags surpass the 50-pound limit by up to three pounds, the fee will be reduced to $30, compared to the current $100 fixed fee.

This fee also applies to bags up to three inches larger than the 62-inch maximum.
