American Airlines Cuts Long-Haul Flights Amid Boeing 787 Delivery Delays

American Airlines has announced reductions in long-haul flight frequencies and temporary suspensions of key international routes due to ongoing delays in the delivery of Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft. These schedule changes will primarily impact European destinations and select domestic routes during the peak summer travel season.

Impacted Routes and Schedule Adjustments

The airline has confirmed three major route suspensions between the United States and Europe:

  • Miami (MIA) – Paris (CDG): Suspended in June and July 2025
  • Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) – Frankfurt (FRA): Suspended in June 2025
  • New York (JFK) – Madrid (MAD): Suspended in July 2025

These changes follow an earlier decision to reduce long-haul frequencies in spring 2025 due to aircraft shortages.

Reduced Frequencies on Popular Routes

In addition to route suspensions, American Airlines will cut flight frequencies on several key services:

  • Philadelphia (PHL) – Rome (FCO): Reduced from twice daily to once daily (June–August 2025)
  • Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) – Honolulu (HNL): Reduced from twice daily to once daily (June–August 2025)
  • New York (JFK) – London Heathrow (LHR): Reduced from four to three daily flights (May 2025)
  • Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) – London Heathrow (LHR): Reduced from five to four daily flights (May 2025)

Aviation Industry Struggles with Supply Chain Issues

American Airlines is not the only carrier grappling with aircraft shortages. British Airways recently canceled its summer flights between London Heathrow (LHR) and Abu Dhabi (AUH) due to delays in Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engine deliveries.

Airlines worldwide are facing supply chain disruptions, partly caused by raw material shortages, increased air travel demand, and geopolitical tensions, such as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which has affected titanium supplies. Currently, American Airlines is awaiting delivery of 30 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, according to industry data.

Alternative Flight Options

While American Airlines scales back its operations, passengers still have alternative nonstop flight options to these destinations:

  • Air France operates direct flights between Miami and Paris (Boeing 777-300ER).
  • Lufthansa serves the Dallas–Frankfurt route using Airbus A340 aircraft.
  • Delta Air Lines offers direct New York–Madrid flights.
