Introducing SkyNest: A Game-Changer for Economy Travelers
Air New Zealand is set to revolutionise long-haul travel with its new SkyNest. This innovation offers the world’s first economy-class bunk beds.
Starting in early 2026, passengers can book these lie-flat sleep pods on the airline’s Boeing 787 Dreamliners. Each SkyNest features six beds, stacked three on each side. Passengers can enjoy privacy curtains, USB ports, reading lights, and fresh linens between bookings.
Air New Zealand CEO Greg Foran emphasised the airline’s focus on passenger comfort. “We want to create the world’s best flying experience,” he said.
Upgraded Business Class Arrives in April 2025
Air New Zealand is also rolling out a new business class cabin ahead of schedule. Originally planned for May, the first aircraft with the new Business Premier cabin will launch in April 2025.
The airline is replacing its herringbone-style seats with private pods, similar to United’s Polaris and Air France’s Premiere seats. Passengers traveling together can lower partitions to share their space.
A premium option, Business Premier Luxe, will feature enclosed sleeping quarters and space for two to dine. Each plane will include 4–8 Luxe seats and 22–34 Business Premier seats.
More Premium Economy and Fewer Overall Seats
Air New Zealand is increasing its Premium Economy seats while reducing the total number of seats on its Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners.
One configuration will drop from 305 to 272 seats, while another will shrink from 275 to 214 seats. However, Premium Economy seats will increase from 21–33 to 33–54 per plane. These seats will feature larger screens, more storage, and dedicated phone charging areas.
Future Expansion and Competitive Landscape
The airline faces intense competition from major U.S. carriers expanding flights to New Zealand. Reuters recently reported a 61% drop in Air New Zealand’s annual profit. Despite this, the airline continues to invest in passenger experience and innovative onboard products.
SkyNest, Business Premier Luxe, and expanded Premium Economy reflect the airline’s commitment to comfort and innovation. Passengers can expect a transformed travel experience on Air New Zealand’s long-haul routes.
