Air New Zealand made history in 2024 by partnering with SpaceX’s Starlink to introduce free, high-speed in-flight Wi-Fi on its domestic flights. After a successful testing phase late last year, the airline is now rolling out the service across its fleet in 2025, transforming regional air travel in New Zealand.
Starlink, the world’s largest low-Earth orbit satellite constellation, delivers high-speed, low-latency internet capable of supporting streaming, video calls, and online gaming. Passengers can now enjoy connectivity similar to home broadband, enhancing the travel experience for both work and leisure.
Air New Zealand’s Chief Digital Officer, Nikhil Ravishankar, highlighted the project’s impact:
“Seamless internet connectivity is reshaping how our customers experience air travel. Whether catching up on work or relaxing with entertainment, this innovation has been a game-changer.”
The rollout, which began with installations on ATR regional aircraft and domestic jets in late 2024, continues in 2025 following a successful trial phase. The airline is the first globally to enable Starlink on its flights, showcasing its commitment to innovation and passenger convenience.
Beyond passenger benefits, the system also supports operational improvements. Pilots can now access real-time aviation weather services, improving flight safety and decision-making.
As Air New Zealand completes the Starlink rollout, it cements its reputation as a leader in leveraging cutting-edge technology to enhance the travel experience for New Zealanders and visitors alike.
