South Africa’s Lift Airline Joins IATA, Signals Regional Expansion Plans

South Africa’s low-cost airline Lift joined the International Air Transport Association this week.

The airline confirmed its new IATA membership on social media. Lift now operates under the official IATA airline code GE.

IATA membership gives airlines global recognition, operational efficiencies, and access to international billing and settlement systems. The membership also supports future expansion and improves access to worldwide distribution channels.

Expansion ambitions take shape

Lift’s IATA approval aligned with its regional growth ambitions. Last year, Global Airways applied to operate flights from South Africa to Mauritius and Réunion. These routes would become Lift’s first international services if approved.

Launched in December 2020, Lift built a strong domestic presence in South Africa. The airline offered a flexible low-cost model focused on customer convenience. Passengers could change or cancel flights until departure, with credits issued for future travel.

A domestic network built for growth

Lift initially launched flights between Johannesburg and Cape Town. It added Johannesburg to Durban services in October 2022. A month later, it completed the golden triangle with Durban to Cape Town flights.

Lift also differentiated itself by offering complimentary coffee, wine, and snacks onboard. This approach helped the airline build loyalty in a competitive domestic market.

The airline operated a single-type fleet of Airbus A320 aircraft. This fleet strategy supported efficiency, reliability, and future short-haul regional expansion.

Lift’s IATA membership strengthened South Africa’s aviation sector and improved global connectivity. The move positioned the airline for its next phase of regional growth.
