Delta Rolls Out New AI Baggage Technology to Speed Up Transfers at Atlanta Airport
DL has introduced a new AI-powered platform called Baggage AI to improve baggage transfers at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. The tool gives ramp workers optimised driving routes to ensure more bags reach their flights on time. Delta handles more than 380,000 bags per day during peak periods like Thanksgiving.
How Baggage AI Works
Baggage AI assigns luggage to ramp drivers through a mobile interface that updates tasks in real time. The platform calculates the most efficient route across the airport ramp to reduce delays and unnecessary driving. Drivers receive clear instructions that let them focus on getting bags to aircraft quickly and safely.
Ramp Teams See Major Improvements
Michael Davis has helped lead the rollout after 11 years with Delta. He has earned several ATL Driver of the Month awards for his performance on the ramp. “AI puts everything in order for me, giving me the opportunity to prioritise which bags get delivered first,” Michael said.
Efficiency Gains Already Showing
Delta reports that Baggage AI has increased baggage-handling efficiency by 30%. The company expects these improvements to help maintain its strong on-time baggage rate above 99%.
“We make sure that our customers can travel with peace of mind,” said Richard Cox, Senior Vice President – Airport Customer Service.
Part of a Larger AI Strategy
Delta is testing multiple AI solutions across its operation to support customers and employees. The airline recently launched a beta of Delta Concierge, a personalised AI assistant available in the Fly Delta app.
The company plans to expand AI-powered tools once testing is complete and customer feedback is assessed.

Delta expects to carry 6.5 million passengers during the Festive period. The new platform helps ramp teams manage heavy volumes while maintaining fast and reliable baggage transfers. The initiative underscores Delta’s ongoing focus on innovation and customer service during the busiest travel weeks of the year.
