British Airways Sets Its Sights on Expanding India Operations
India: A Key Market for British Airways
British Airways plans to expand flights and frequencies to India, calling it their most important market after the US.
CEO Sean Doyle says India’s growth, paired with a potential UK–India Free Trade Agreement, signals huge opportunity.
The airline currently operates 56 flights a week from five Indian cities: Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, and Hyderabad.
First Class Returns, Routes Multiply
BA will reintroduce First Class on the Mumbai–Heathrow route in October, after nearly five years.
The airline is also evaluating new routes to cities like Pune, Amritsar, and Ahmedabad.
Additional flights to major hubs like Mumbai and Bengaluru are also on the table.
Supporting Business, Trade and Cargo Growth
British Airways is aligning its strategy with the UK–India trade deal, which could unlock easier business travel.
Cargo plays a growing role, with UK exports in life sciences, electronics, and automotive parts driving demand.
IAG Cargo calls India a “priority growth market” and is investing in better tracking and cold-chain solutions.
Facing Strong Competition, Staying Agile
Rivals like Air India and IndiGo are also ramping up UK–India routes, alongside the ever-dominant Gulf carriers.
British Airways is betting on direct flights, upgraded cabins, and loyalty perks to retain premium travellers.
Its Executive Club and On Business programmes offer tier points and special rates for India-bound travel.
India Expansion Part of a Global Push
Beyond India, BA has launched or resumed flights to Abu Dhabi, Riga, Accra, and Kuala Lumpur in 2024.
Upgrades in Indian ground services, including lounges and biometric check-in, will enhance the travel experience.
Connecting Two Dynamic Nations
With India’s booming economy and growing trade links, BA’s expansion reflects a long-term investment in global growth.
“We’re proud to be part of this journey,” says Moran Birger, BA’s South Asia chief.
British Airways is ready to connect people, ideas and business between the UK and India – now more than ever.
