American Airlines Launches New Bag Screening Pilot

American Airlines and CBP Launch Remote Baggage Screening Pilot to Streamline International Connections

American Airlines has partnered with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to trial a new baggage screening process. The initiative, called International Remote Baggage Screening (IRBS), simplifies travel for passengers connecting through U.S. airports.

Passengers arriving from select international airports no longer need to collect and recheck their baggage. After clearing CBP Passport Control, they head straight to TSA and continue to their next flight. This remote screening process uses advanced technology to inspect luggage without changing any existing security procedures.

Pilot Launches on Sydney–Los Angeles Route

American Airlines, CBP, and Sydney Airport launched the pilot on the daily Sydney to Los Angeles route. Both partners plan to expand IRBS to more cities soon.

“This initiative enhances safety and streamlines baggage inspection,” said Gary Tomasulo, VP of Global Corporate Security at American Airlines.

CBP’s Diane J. Sabatino called IRBS a key step in their Airport Modernisation Plan. Sydney Airport’s Graham White praised the project for improving safety, efficiency, and the passenger experience.

The initiative forms part of American’s larger effort to modernise international travel, alongside other projects like One Stop Security.
