Qatar Airways Group and Virgin Australia have received final approval from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) for their airline alliance. This decision allows Virgin Australia’s 28 weekly flights between Australia and Doha to proceed under a wet-lease agreement with Qatar Airways.
New Flight Routes and Expanded Connectivity
Starting in June 2025, Virgin Australia will operate long-haul flights from Sydney, Brisbane, and Perth to Doha. Melbourne flights will begin in December 2025. These flights, using Qatar Airways’ aircraft, will connect passengers through Hamad International Airport. Travelers will gain access to over 100 destinations across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.
The alliance expands travel options and strengthens loyalty programs. Virgin Australia’s Velocity members and Qatar Airways’ Privilege Club members can now earn and redeem points more easily.
Economic, Employment Impact and Sustainability
The Australian tourism sector will benefit significantly, with an estimated AUD 3 billion in economic value generated over five years. The partnership will also create jobs, with Qatar Airways offering secondment opportunities for 20 Virgin Australia pilots and 40 cabin crew in 2025.
Sustainability remains a core focus of the partnership. In October 2024, both airlines signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to advance Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) initiatives. They will also collaborate on environmental management and workforce development.
Investment and Strategic Growth
The Australian Government recently approved Qatar Airways Group’s acquisition of a 25% stake in Virgin Australia. This investment complements Bain Capital’s majority ownership and reflects confidence in Australia’s aviation industry.
Qatar Airways Group CEO, Engr. Badr Mohammed Al-Meer, emphasised the importance of this approval:
“This marks the beginning of a new era for our partnership. We are committed to enhancing competition, delivering world-class service, and supporting Australian businesses and jobs.”
Virgin Australia CEO, Dave Emerson, highlighted the alliance’s benefits:
“This is a defining moment for Virgin Australia. The increased competition has already made travel between Australia and key international destinations more affordable.”
Bain Capital Partner, Mike Murphy, echoed these sentiments:
“This partnership strengthens both airlines and unlocks new opportunities for Australian travelers.”
With final approval secured, Virgin Australia and Qatar Airways will reshape international travel from Australia. The alliance offers better connectivity, competitive fares, and long-term economic benefits.
